Tonight's the night. And it's gonna happen again and again. Has to happen.

Summary[]

Dexter "Dex" Morgan (née Moser), also dubbed The Bay Harbor Butcher, is the titular main protagonist of the crime drama television franchise Dexter.

He is a serial killer who witnessed the murder and dismemberment of his own mother as a young child, resulting in an insatiable desire to kill. He was taught by his adoptive father Harry to channel his urges for "good" through a vigilante code called the "Code of Harry," by which he would only target other killers. He also works as a forensic technician and blood spatter analyst for Miami Metro Homicide.

  • Multi-Inconvenient (Killed 150+ people primarily to satisfy his bloodlust; kept James Doakes in a cage and psychologically scarred him by killing someone in front of him, later framing him as the Bay Harbor Butcher; barbarically killed a random, innocent person due to rage and grief after Rita's death; abandoned his own son, Harrison, leaving him with trauma; is indirectly responsible for the emotional distress and/or deaths of several loved ones due to his selfish actions; killed his own friend, Sergeant Logan, to escape prison)

Moral Prevention Severity:

  • Noble Prevention (has done several heroic acts for no pragmatic reasons, is affable, has a code of honor and standards, cares about his family and friends, is capable of feeling remorse for his actions)
  • Atrocious Prevention (is literally a serial killer)
  • Living Hell (Has an extremely tragic past of witnessing his own mother get brutally dismembered by a chainsaw as well as the fate worse than death of having to sit in her (and three other people) blood while starving for two days that gave him an insatiable desire to kill other people. He was then taught by his adoptive father that he was intrinsically abnormal and could only survive by "channeling" his urges. He lost or severely hurt several people he cared about due to his lifestyle, including Harry himself, Rita, Brian and his son Harrison. Once his sister Deb died as a result of his inaction, he subjected himself to the force of a hurricane in an attempt to end his own life, but he failed and is still alive, having to bear the burdens of his life and the trail of suffering it left for him and everyone he cared about. He wants to live a normal life, but it is never possible, as his "Dark Passenger" follows him everywhere and leaves behind destruction in his wake. He was also shown to be rather insecure and depressed beforehand, believing that he is a bad person on several ocassions and also noting that he hardly has anyone he can connect with.)
  • Complete Moral Agency (Although he was taught and basically groomed by his adoptive father to kill other murderers, he is fully aware of the moral implications of his actions)
